The Value of Hard Work: A Lifelong Lesson in Saving

Hard work is always a challenge. I remember when I was a small child, I wanted a "Book." During the summer, my father would take me to work with him, and I loved it. I would do my best to complete whatever tasks he asked of me and then ask, “Did I do enough to earn a 'Book'?" I must have been only 5 or 6 years old, but I tried my hardest.

After several days of repeatedly asking for a "Book," my parents gave me a coloring book, but I wasn’t satisfied. I kept working and kept asking for a "Book." Eventually, they gave me a small Bible, but still, I wasn't happy. This went on for some time, until one day I saw my older siblings’ "Book." When I saw it, I made it clear that this was the type of "Book" I wanted. It was a small savings account book.

Now, some of you may not know what I mean, but years ago, you could open a savings account at a local bank and receive a small book where deposits and withdrawals were recorded. It was a simple but meaningful way of tracking your savings. My parents eventually understood what I was asking for, and they helped me get my very own "Book." That was the beginning of my lifelong journey to save money.

Hard Work and the Biblical Perspective on Work

Working is an essential part of life. The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 9:10, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom." This verse reminds us that while hard work is often difficult, it is crucial for providing for ourselves and our families.

At no point in scripture are we encouraged to seek handouts or entitlements. Christians are not called to lead lazy lives, sitting idle and expecting others to take care of us. Yes, there are times when life can be tough, and we may need a helping hand or a little extra support. However, we are never told to become content depending on others, unless we are hindered physically or mentally.

The Importance of Diligence and Saving

So, let us all strive to work diligently and do our part. If we are blessed and diligent in our efforts, we may even find ourselves with a "Book" at some point—a savings account book, perhaps—and save a little for a rainy day or unexpected expenses. And, when we do, we will be amazed at how God blesses us through our hard work and perseverance.
