Elvis Has Left the Building: What We Can Learn About Life, Death, and Eternal Hope
On March 3, 1955, Elvis Presley made his first TV appearance on the Louisiana Hayride. Of course, we all know the iconic phrase "Elvis has left the building," but did you know that it’s not just a metaphor? Elvis truly left this world, permanently. Do you remember where you were when you first heard the news of his death?
For some of you, that moment might feel like ancient history, but for those of us who lived through it, it was big news. I remember exactly where I was—I was working in Memphis, Tennessee, and the news was the talk of the town. We were all eager to learn the details.
Where Will You Be When You Die?
Have you ever thought about it? Where will you be when your time comes? Will you be at home in Kentucky, in a hospital, with friends and family, or perhaps alone? In real estate, they always say, “Location, location, location,” but when it comes to our death, the location—and timing—is unknown.
For me, when people look back on the day I pass, my name won’t be on any historical highlight lists. No one will remember when I made my first TV appearance (though I’ve had a few). But I believe I will remember. I believe I’ll recall the day, the location, and the time. Why? Because when I leave this world—permanently—it will be the greatest change of location I’ll ever experience.
Eternal Life and the Promise of a New Location
Here’s the difference: I already have eternal life in Christ. I have His blessings and the promise of entrance into His presence. When I die, I’ll simply be changing addresses again.
As I live on this earth, I want to enjoy life, have fun, and fellowship with others, regardless of my location. Whether I’m on TV, sitting at a desk, or typing on a computer, I’m still in the building—for now. Later, the future is already taken care of.
Conclusion: Live Fully in the Present
While we don’t know when or where our final day will come, we can find peace in knowing that for those who believe, our future is secure. We are promised eternal life, and that’s the most important location of all.
John 14:2-3 (NIV):
"My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
