Waves and Faith: Understanding God's Unwavering Presence and Power

Waves hold a treasure chest of lessons for us as Christians. They are consistent, rolling day in and day out, month after month, and year after year. Whether crashing onto beaches, against rocks, or flowing through the open waters of the vast oceans, waves remind us of two very important things about God.

First, God is always at work, never sleeping or resting. Waves have been moving tirelessly for centuries—through times of peace and conflict, prosperity and hardship, inflation and depression, and especially through frustration. Waves continue to roll on stormy nights and sunny days, just as God works in our lives during both good and bad times. We don’t need to understand everything He is doing, nor do we have to be involved in all of it. We can rest assured that He is at work 24/7, driven by His love and concern for us and all of humanity. As Jesus Christ said in John 5:17, "My Father is always at His work, to this very day, and I too am working." A lazy man accomplishes little, but a consistent worker will see great results.

Secondly, watching the waves form and move effortlessly reminds us that they cannot be controlled. While we may try to build walls to hold them back or alter their direction for a time, their power is unmatched by any efforts of man. Remember the story in Genesis 11, when the people of the earth set out to build a great tower reaching to the heavens. Yet, in Genesis 11:5, it clearly states, "But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building." Man’s small tower can never compare to the greatness and power of God.

As we watch the waves roll, we can rest well tonight, knowing that the God who created the vast oceans and their waves is still at work—even within us. Without question, He has the power, strength, and desire to control even the smallest particles of air around us.

Lord, You have a plan. As You work Your plan, help us to glimpse what You may be doing, but most of all, let us feel Your presence along the way, so that we may find peace.
