Why Evangelism Still Matters in the Age of Social Media

The goal of social media may vary from person to person, but at its core, it’s an effort to spread news and information to others. However, it can be difficult to determine whether what we see is true and accurate—or simply fake and misleading. Yet, people are constantly engaging with it.

There seems to be little hesitation in posting whatever crosses our minds, whether it’s hurtful, damaging, uplifting, or encouraging. And while we freely share our opinions online, many people still hesitate to even mention evangelism in conversation. But evangelism is not a bad word—it's one worth learning and embracing.

I recently read a statement by a preacher who said, "Evangelism is not a profession but a passion." As Christians, we are both encouraged and commanded to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Telling others about His love, grace, and mercy is evangelism. Explaining God’s plan of salvation through Jesus is evangelism.

Romans 10:14 (NKJV) reminds us:
“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Many read this and assume the responsibility lies only with pastors. But this verse speaks to every believer. All Christians are called to proclaim the saving message of Jesus Christ and His gift of salvation.

In the final words of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus didn’t commission only preachers. He spoke to all believers.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:19, NKJV)

Someone most likely told you about Jesus and the plan of salvation. So the question is: Who is telling today’s children and young people about Jesus? They’re being taught everything else—shouldn’t they also hear about the Savior?

That is what evangelism is at its core: talking to others about Jesus. Let’s not be afraid to share the most important message the world will ever hear.
