Stepping Into a New Season of Life: Walking in New Shoes with God’s Joy
They slip on—and for me, they’re taking a little time to get used to.
New shoes always do.
In the same way, a new lifestyle—with new habits, schedules, and changing responsibilities—can feel unfamiliar and even uncomfortable. As college students wrap up another academic year, some are celebrating the incredible milestone of completing their degrees. 🎓
They’re celebrating in a variety of ways, but many will soon head off to work. Some are preparing for marriage, ready to embrace even greater changes in their lives.
One such graduate this year is a beautiful, talented, and hard-working young woman I met years ago. In her cap and gown, she looks vibrant and full of life. I first saw her years ago at a Trunk or Treat event when she was just a little girl. She radiated joy back then—and she still does.
Childlike Joy in a Grown-Up World
Children have a way of brightening our world with their simple smiles, chubby cheeks, and carefree steps into our hearts. But what changes?
Why do we, as adults, so often get caught up in the busyness of life that we stop smiling as much? Why do we lose that light we once had?
Maybe it’s because we get tangled in others’ expectations. Maybe we become weighed down by routines, careers, and the constant pressure to carry ourselves with strength and seriousness. Somewhere along the way, we forget to pause, breathe, and let the wings of joy flap freely again.
Jesus Lived Real Life—with Joy
Yes, Jesus was (and is) holy and divine—and He deserves our highest respect. But don't you think He laughed?
Don’t you imagine He enjoyed catching a fish, bouncing a ball with children, or sitting around a fire talking with friends?
Jesus was real. And we should be, too.
So, slip on those new shoes and walk confidently. Put on that cap and gown—even with bright yellow socks underneath—and celebrate who you are: a sweet, beautiful creation of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:20 – "They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart."
May we all step into this next season with that same gladness of heart, trusting God with our journey.
