Reflecting Christ: Becoming a Living Image of God’s Love
A picture can only reflect an image—it cannot capture the vibrant feeling of being there in person. For example, the world has seen countless pictures of Yosemite, but after a recent visit to that national park, I was reminded that there is nothing like being there. Smelling the fresh air, listening to the waterfalls, and taking in the brilliant colors can never be fully felt or sensed in a picture. However, photographs can help us understand a portion of the experience.
In the same way, as Christians, we cannot be everything that Christ is, nor can we touch and transform lives as only He can. But we can reflect Him. We can live in such a way that mirrors His love, grace, and truth—impacting others and inspiring them to seek, know, and accept Him personally.
The New Living Translation of Ephesians 5:1–2 puts it this way:
“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.”
There are many admirable examples of God-fearing people in Scripture, but my heart’s desire is to be like Christ, and Christ alone. I do not aspire to be like anyone else in this world. Romans 12:2 reminds us:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
No Christian should strive to model their life after the world. Instead, we are called to be changed, renewed, and transformed into the likeness of Christ.
While we can never fully replicate Him in His divine and holy nature, we must strive each day to be the clearest reflection of Him possible—so that those around us are drawn not to us, but to Him.
So today, as we walk, talk, and live, may we reflect Christ just a little more than we did yesterday.
