Finding Faith in the Face of a Cancer Scare: A Personal Reflection on God's Purpose
Receiving a cancer diagnosis—or even the possibility of one—is a deeply challenging and emotional experience. Recently, a close friend of mine underwent a CT scan, and the results showed what appeared to be a small but concerning spot on his lung. Acting swiftly, the medical team recommended additional scans to determine whether the cancer had spread or if other areas were affected.
After a series of follow-up tests and anxious waiting, the doctors concluded that there was no cancer present. While this news brought immense relief, my friend and his wife endured nearly three weeks of uncertainty, fear, and overwhelming questions. They were left wondering: What if the outcome had been different?
Was it a divine miracle or a simple misdiagnosis? Could it have been a small spot of pneumonia that resolved on its own? The truth remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: their sense of gratitude and relief was profound. Still, the question lingered—why did they have to go through such a difficult experience?
If we take Romans 8:28 to heart—“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose”—then perhaps this experience wasn’t in vain. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is not only alive but actively working in the lives of those who follow Him. Events, whether joyful or painful, are rarely random. Often, God allows such trials to capture our attention and encourage deeper reliance on Him—not only as our Savior but also as the Lord of our lives.
Consider the example of King Nebuchadnezzar in the book of Daniel. After exalting himself above all, he was humbled by God. In Daniel 4:32, the Lord declares:
"You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
After seven years of living like an animal, Nebuchadnezzar finally recognized God’s sovereignty. As recorded in Daniel 4:37:
“...I praised and exalted and glorified the King of heaven, because everything He does is right and all His ways are just. And those who walk in pride He is able to humble.”
As we examine our own lives, especially during moments of crisis, we must remember that a holy, sovereign, and loving God watches over us. Whether through miraculous healing or the unfolding of ordinary circumstances, God remains in control. And for that, we can be grateful—knowing that He is with us in every step, using all things for our good and His purpose.
