Life, Death, and Tea: A Reflection on What Truly Matters
A little sugar, hot water, and a tea bag blended with a bit of lemon is a normal part of my mornings during the fall and winter months. I’ve perfected my cup of tea to an art form! Well, to be honest, the Keurig machine does play a role in how much water is added to the cup. But I do my part by knowing just how much sugar and lemon to add along with the tea bag. Once stirred, it’s just right for me! And that’s the point – it’s just right for me!
Some people don’t enjoy tea at all. Others may enjoy iced tea but not hot tea. Then, there are those who would never consider adding lemon to their tea. We all have different tastes. We all have unique preferences, and that diversity is what makes the world go round. But here’s a thought: Is there anything we must all agree on? Is there any idea, event, or concept that unites us all?
The answer is yes. There’s one certainty that we all share: death. At some point, each one of us will face it. The way we die and where it happens will vary, but death is inevitable. Regardless of how we like our tea, or whether we ever even taste tea at all, we will all die. And, just in case you weren’t aware, when we die, we are truly dead.
At the end of our lives, the only thing that matters is not whether you prefer lemon in your tea. No, that’s a minor concern. The truth is found in Luke 12:48(b), which states: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” If you have been blessed with the knowledge of Jesus Christ, you have been given much. What you do with that knowledge will have an eternal impact on your life.
It’s important to remember that simply knowing about Jesus is not enough. Even the demons knew who Jesus was, as we learn in James 2:19. They knew, yet they rejected Him as Lord.
So, rather than stressing about how much lemon to put in your tea, focus on something far more significant: your relationship with Jesus. This relationship will shape your eternity.
