The Difference Between a Woman and a Lady: Lessons from Two Remarkable Women
There is a distinct difference between a woman and a lady. While the world is full of women with a wide variety of traits, habits, personalities, and opinions, there are far fewer ladies. Although I am not an expert on what it means to be a lady, I have been blessed to know a very few. These women are unique, strong, and truly inspiring.
The Story of a Simple, Strong Woman
She was not from a wealthy family and often had to make do with simple meals alongside her siblings and parents—sometimes, just a plate of old-fashioned noodles. She would play with little friends a few miles away, enjoying their toys, bicycles, and other luxuries that seemed out of reach in her own home, simply because there were not enough funds for such things.
School was a joy for her—refreshing and exciting. She had a sweet beauty and met a young country boy who swept her off her feet. Before long, she found herself expecting a child. She was just another young girl, but she was always focused on two things: learning and working.
Although she never attended school beyond high school and never earned titles as an up-and-coming success, she was determined to be the best version of herself—a wife, mother, worker, and faithful Christian. Over time, she surrounded herself with other women who were not only intelligent but wise in their walk with God. These were not the kind of women who sought wild parties or events that drew attention to themselves. Instead, they were ethical, moral, and respected.
As she continued to grow, her husband also found his place in the world. Together, they became a dedicated couple involved in their local church, business, and the Gideons International organization. She went on to serve as the State President of the Women’s Auxiliary arm of the Gideons and became a speaker with the Storytellers League.
At her funeral, hundreds of people attended, with others standing in the corners, hallways, and vestibule of the church. She had been a simple little girl who transformed into more than just a woman—she became a lady, always remembering her role as a wife and mother.
Esther: A Biblical Example of Courage and Strength
Esther in the Bible was not from a royal family, nor was she highly educated. Yet, she was a learner who worked hard at following the guidance of her uncle Mordecai and, ultimately, God’s will. At one point in her life, Esther had to make a bold stand and tell her husband, King Xerxes, that he was about to annihilate her people—and, eventually, even her. Esther stood her ground and made the famous statement in Esther 4:16: “If I perish, I perish.” She was willing to die for her God and His people.
The Pursuit of Being a Lady in Today's World
Our world is filled with women who eagerly share their "stuff" on social media, hoping to change minds and garner attention. While their voices can be loud, it is refreshing to find, from time to time, a woman striving to be a lady. These women work hard, care deeply, and are sensitive to the needs of others. They simply do what God has called them to do, trusting Him to take care of the rest.
A Personal Reflection
As a man, I often wish I could be more like the two ladies mentioned above—Esther and my mother. If I could, I believe I would be a far better man.
